"Stop the Ocean" was a song that came melody-first and sat without lyrics for over two years. I finally finished the song at a songwriting weekend at my friend Sue Horowitz's home in Maine.

 

This recording is from a night where, while watching TV with my roommate and his girlfriend, I excused myself abruptly, saying "I think I have to write some music." I went into my room and within the space of an hour, the melodies for this song, Bones, and Divide by Zero came out.

I didn't really know where the song was going, and there's a bridge here that didn't make it into the final version, but by the last chorus, I knew that the ocean would figure somewhat prominently.
